MATHCOUNTS

MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide mathematics competition program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.  Each year, the National MATHCOUNTS Foundation provides free handbooks to teachers and schools across the country.  The handbook contains more than 300 challenging math problems designed to promote higher order thinking skills and problem solving strategies.
MATHCOUNTS appreciates the generous donations from these sponsors:

Teachers use these materials to coach their students as part of the competition program and many supplement their regular lesson plans with MATHCOUNTS materials.  After several months of coaching, participating schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in a local competitions coordinated by   TSPE Chapters.  Teachers or coaches may organize school competitions to determine official team members.

Local Chapter Competitions are held in February each year and are comprised of three rounds of written testing – Sprint, Target, and Team.  The top 10 students from the written testing are selected to compete in a fast-paced head to head oral Countdown Round.  The Countdown Round is used for fun and to practice for the state level competition.  At least four (4) teams and four (4) individuals from the Preston Trail competition will advance to compete at the state level, where the top four (4) students and their coaches earn the right to represent their state at the national level.  The national competition is typically held in May.  Travel expenses for the State teams and coaches are paid by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation.
